Tarquinia, known in earlier times as Corneto, is situated in the Lazio Maremma. It enjoys a rich cultural heritage. While Rome was still in its infancy, Tarquinia was already an important city in ancient Etruria. The Etruscan people, whose precise origins still remain something of a mystery, are believed to have first arrived here around the year 900 BC . Stunning artworks, some of the finest examples of which are to be found in Tarquina, leave no doubt as to their highly advanced culture.

The necropolis at Tarquinia is home to some of the finest examples of Etruscan art in the world today and in recognition of its archaeological importance it was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004. In gaining this status, the art work of the necropolises at Tarquinia and Cerveteri were categorized masterpieces of creative genius.

The museum is housed in this 15th century Gothic palace and is just a few minutes walk from the apartment. The necropolis, which is situated on a hill just outside the town, contains 6000 graves. It is particularly noted for its 200 painted tombs, the earliest of which date from the 7th century BC.
Tarquinia lies at the southern tip of the Maremma area, home of the proud Butteri, herdsmen adept with cattle and horses who lived a lifestyle similar to that of the traditional American cowboy. In 1890, the Butteri famously won a challenge with Wild Buffalo Bill who was touring Europe at the time. Further reading on the butteri is available on our Articles and Further Reading page.
